When a society seeks a leader, they want a compassionate and visionary personality. Mr. Fashola, who governed Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial capital, from May 29, 2007, to May 29, 2015, has proven to possess these enviable leadership qualities and more over the years.

Since Mr. Fashola was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988, he has soared in his legal and political career. His academic achievements laid a solid foundation and set the stage for a career marked by exceptional achievements.

Besides distinguishing himself in the legal profession with the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), the former Lagos governor has left an indelible mark on the nation during his service as governor and federal minister for a total of 16 years.

Under Mr. Fashola’s leadership in Lagos, the state experienced a remarkable transformation, becoming the envy of Nigerians nationwide. His administration prioritised infrastructural development, urban renewal, and effective public service delivery.

One of Mr. Fashola’s notable achievements as governor was the successful implementation of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law, which aimed to improve road safety and traffic management in the bustling metropolis. His administration also initiated various infrastructure projects, such as the Lekki-Epe Expressway, the expansion of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, and the construction of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. These initiatives significantly eased traffic congestion and improved transportation efficiency.

Fashola’s passion for education was evident in his robust investment in the sector during his tenure. He prioritised improving public schools, enhancing their infrastructure, and implementing policies to strengthen the quality of education.

Beyond his accomplishments in Lagos State, Mr. Fashola’s competence and dedication to public service led to his appointment as the Minister of Power, Works, and Housing in 2015.

In this role, he tackled the challenges facing the power sector, initiated critical infrastructure projects, and worked tirelessly to improve the quality of housing in Nigeria. His efforts were instrumental in increasing power generation, expanding access to electricity, and enhancing the country’s road networks.

Mr. Fashola’s tenure as minister witnessed significant milestones, including the reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road and the successful execution of the National Housing Programme. The rehabilitation of the ever-busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was also nearly completed during the former minister’s tenure. His strategic leadership and ability to drive change were key factors in the progress made in these sectors, positively impacting the lives of Nigerians across the country.

Until he bowed out as the Minister of Works and Housing on May 29, 2023, Mr. Fashola served with enviable commitment and zeal worthy of emulation.

On this special day, Gatekeepers News joins friends, family, associates, and Lagosians in celebrating BRF for his selfless dedication to public service and unwavering commitment to helping build a better Nigeria.
