The International Women’s Society of Nigeria, recently held its annual Widows Feast in Lagos. The event is an annual empowerment programme of the 62-year old reputable women organisation.
This year’s event was held at the palace of Elegushi of Ikate Kingdom, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, who is a patron of IWS.
Oba Elegushi was represented at the event by his wife, Olori Sekinat Aramide, who treated the Ibiwumi Braithwaite-Akinnola-led exco team to a rousing reception.
The main objectives of the programme are to empower Widows in their already existing businesses or enable them to start a business or place qualified and trained widows in the career that will help them cater to their needs, thus ensuring they do not go through their experience alone, giving them life-long connections and lasting support.
Over 500 applications were received and out of which 300 were trained in various skils while a total of 148 widows were handed different materials such as deep freezers, generating sets, sewing machines.
The International Women’s Society was founded in 1957 in Lagos by a group of International public spirited women.
Women are one of the most powerful agents in bringing about world change. When women are educated, healthy, and safe, they hope, they empower other women, lift up their families, their communities, and the world.
