Mobolaji Johnson, A Man of Unimpeachable Integrity – Gbadamosi

The pioneer Governor of Lagos State, a man of unimpeachable honesty, integrity and industry, General Mobolaji Johnson, lived a life of service to humanity unto his last breath.

Put in charge of a brand new state, created out of the old Lagos Colony and parts of the old Western Region, Brigadier Johnson, as he was then known, put together a cabinet of some of the smartest Lagosians alive at the time, young and old.

Between them, within 8 years, they created a miracle that was the cynosure of all eyes. By the time he left office in 1975, Lagos was on a sure road to becoming the economic powerhouse of West Africa.

Out of office, General Johnson, the real People’s General of Lagos, a real life officer and Gentleman, continued his selfless service to humanity, contributing his time and resources to many worthy causes, including an educational Foundation that has done sterling work in improving the lot of several generations of youths.

Julius Berger, the largest construction company in Nigeria, made him Chairman, and hung on to him for dear life, for as long as they possibly could. Integrity, honesty and dedication to service.

General Mobolaji Johnson was a giant, physically and reputationally among his peers. His open door policy, his warmth, his candour and his caring character endeared him to all, young and old. He will be sorely missed by Lagosians, Nigerians, his brothers at arms, and his illustrious family.

May God Almighty grant his family the fortitude to bear this inevitable yet painful loss and may his soul find eternal rest in the bosom of the Lord. Amen.
