Danube Street located off Ibrahim Babangida Way in Maitama Abuja is a special street. From the outside the street does not look special. Once you enter the street, one thing you cannot but notice, especially early in the day and till late afternoon is the number of Policemen attached to many of the houses. While some have two others have as many as five or six. This is where some of those who really matter in Nigeria have their own homes. Not their guest houses, not their cotact places but where they come around to relax, out of the prying eyes. Former President Goodluck Jonathan is believed to have a home on this street and he is believed to visit the imposing mansion on Sundays when he is in town. This is where Mrs Lot J. lives with her kids.
Apart from the former President, not less than thrity serving and former Governors have homes here. Two former Inspectors-General of Police as well as three former Chief Justices of the Federation are also believed to have homes here also. The immediate past Speaker of the House of Representative, Aminu Tambuwal, his predecessor, Dimeji Bankole as well as many other top political office holders, past and present have homes in the same area. The attraction seems to be nothing other than the fact that the others have homes there and so each one of them seems keen on having one.
Some of the mansions here have fences that even dwarf the houses they protect and you hardly see anyone come in or out of the houses except the Mobile or regular policemen that guide the houses. In the nights, especially when there are high level political activities in town, the street however look busy. But it is when there are major events in the city that involves members of the Council of State, which of course include serving State Governors as well as former Chief Justices of the Federation that the street is busiest. A plot of land in this part of Abuja would easily go for between Three Hundred Million and five Hundred Million Naira depending on how close to the road it is, while many of the homes there were valued at over five hundred million Naira each. Do we need anyone to tell EFCC where to start his probe?
