The former chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Abdulmumin Jibrin, operates foreign accounts, documents released by a group known as the Anti-Corruption Unit, have alleged.
The documents say Jibrin operates an account with the ING Bank located at Forum House, Granville Street, St-Heller, Jerssy JE2 4UF, in the Channel Islands, United Kingdom.
The address contained in the account is 453 Crankbrook Road, Ilford Essex IG2 6EW, while a breakdown showed that there was a total of £1.558million in the account between June 1 and June 30, 2016.
The account statement showed however that £623.44 was withdrawn from it with a balance of £1.376,193.84. The organization said the bank details were obtained by some lawyers in the United Kingdom.
Based on the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, Nigerian public office holders are barred from maintaining any foreign account.
Part 1, Paragraph 3 of the Constitution states that; “The President, Vice President, members of the National Assembly and Houses of Assembly of states and such other public officers or persons as the National Assembly may by law shall not maintain or operate a bank account in any country outside Nigeria.”
Jibrin could not be reached for reaction last night, but he had accused Speaker Yakubu Dogara of waging a campaign against him.
Jibrin, who nominated Dogara for the speaker’s seat on June 9, 2015, fell out of favour with the speaker on July 20 this year when he was removed as the chairman of the appropriation committee due to his role in the controversy that trailed the 2016 budget.
Following his removal, he came up with several corruption allegations against the speaker and three other principal officers of the House, namely; the Deputy Speaker, Yussuf Suleimon Lasun; Chief Whip, Alhassan Ado Doguwa and Minority Leader, Leo Ogor.
