Dabiri-Erewa Warns Nigerian Students Against Going To Hostile Environments

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Relations and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has warned Nigerian students against going to hostile environments abroad for education.
She gave the warning yesterday in Abuja when a delegation from the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges (NITC) Foundation paid her a courtesy visit.
“You really do not need to be going to hostile environments. The students that are there don’t need to worry but those going need to worry. You can go abroad to study but don’t go to a hostile environment,” she said.
She said Nigerian students who were affected by the situation in Turkey had gone through hell. “But we are glad that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs intervened immediately and resolved the matter diplomatically,” she said. She, however, said the government would not compromise the dignity of Nigerians anywhere in the world.
Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians to patronise universities in the country, saying; “They don’t need it because what they are looking for is actually here in Nigeria. The president is tackling corruption, insecurity and trying to fix the economy. By the time we finish, people will come to Nigeria to study. There are better private universities here in Nigeria,” she said.
The director of the foundation, Behlul Fatih Basaran, said it had approved $5,000 monthly allocation to 25 Nigerian students in Turkey who were under its scholarship programme. This, he added, would continue until they complete their programmes.
He also said the foundation had offered scholarships to 29 Nigerians who returned from Turkey to continue their studies at the Nile University of Nigeria in Abuja. The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Huseyin Sert, urged Nigerian students who were affected by the situation in Turkey not to panic, saying the school was ready to offer them admission with a 50% tuition fee discount.
