An early morning fire yesterday razed goods worth several billions of Naira in 94 of the 201 shops at the Tejuosho main market, Yaba.
The fire which mostly affected the area directly opposite the Presbyterian Church, was said to have started from one of the shops where wears, shoes, and bags were stored.
It was also gathered that the fire which started around 7 am spread to other shops due to some highly inflammable materials stored in some of the shops. The inflammable items included foot wears, cloths, nylon materials and generators filled with fuel.
A witness said the fuel stored in the various generators caused occasional explosions as the fire raged from one shop to the other.
This prompted the immediate activation of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency’s (LASEMA) Emergency Response Team (ERT), as well as the Lagos State Fire Service from Ilupeju and Alausa Fire Station.
Whilst the emergency teams were battling to contain the flames, many shop owners were alerted and they tried to salvage some of their wares.
Confirming the incident, LASEMA General Manager, Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu, said no life was lost. He said shops barricaded with iron bars were cut open using concrete cutter for the fire service to gain access to the affected areas and also prevent escalation.
Another fire incident occurred at no 83 Abeokuta Street, Ebute Metta, within the same period. He said about that other fire: “The agency along with the Lagos State Fire Service also responded to the fire outbreak at No. 83 Abeokuta Street Ebute Metta, on the same day. This prompted the immediate activation of the Agency’s ERT to the scene. The cause of that inferno remains unknown, although it was discovered that the fire started from one of the rooms in the three-bedroom flat of the first floor of the two-storey building. No life was lost but two male adults who sustained minor injuries while trying to put out the fire were immediately treated by LASEMA Medical Team.”
