President Muhammadu Buhari has again congratulated the president-elect of Gambia, Adama Barrow, on his electoral victory.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said in a statement that Buhari was in a telephone conversation with Barrow on Monday shortly before his (Buhari’s) trip to the International Forum on Peace and Security in Senegal.
Shehu said the president had earlier congratulated Barrow on Saturday after his triumph was announced.
He said President Buhari today expressed his gladness at the conduct of the contestants before, during and after the elections of Gambia.
He quoted Buhari as urging Barrow “to ensure that the transition process is also as smooth as the electoral process and carry everyone along in his task of taking the Gambia to a new level.”
He said President Buhari also expressed his admiration at the existing rapport between Barrow and other contestants, especially the current president who lost the election.
Buhari was also quoted as stating that democracy, rule of law and respect for each other were fast taking roots in Africa and that Gambia had also become a role model for Africa and the world at large.
