Fela’s Mother-in-law Dies

Afrobeat musician, Femi Kuti, has announced the death of his maternal grandmother.

In a short tribute posted on Instagram on Tuesday, Femi said the deceased “changed my life by talking sense into me changing my whole attitude positively.”

His ex-wife, Funke Kuti, said she heard of the death from her son, Made.

“Nanny you were the most amazing grandmother-in-law ever. You were the strongest grandmother ever liveth. You were so strong even with everything you had been through,” she wrote.

She then prayed that Femi and his sister, Yeni Kuti, should have “the strength to persevere and get through this sad period.”

The deceased, fondly called Nanny, was the mother of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s only legal wife, Remilekun Taylor-Kuti.

Fela and Remi had three children, Yeni, Femi and the late Sola, together. The afrobeat legend once married 27 other wives in one day in a show of defiance against tradition but divorced them long before his death in 1997.

Remilekun died in 2012.

Fela had other children, including Seun, Motunrayo and Kunle, from other women.
