Flood, Rainstorm Killed Village Head, 5 Others In Niger

A village head and five others were killed by flood and rainstorm in Mashegu and Borgu local government areas of Niger State, Daily Trust learnt on Wednesday.

The village head, identified as Abdulkareem Jiya died in Masama community in Borgu, while three women and two children lost their lives to flood in Ibi, community of Mashegu local government.

The village head whose house was affected by the rainstorm and flood, died while trying to rescue some of his family members that were trapped.

The wall of his house was said to have collapsed, killing him instantly.

Rescue team made of natives was said to have recovered his remains after the rain had subsided.

According to the Director General of the State Emergency Management Agency, Ibrahim Ahmed Inga, several houses were submerged and totally destroyed, while farms were also affected.

He also said no fewer than 600 people in both communities were displaced.

Inga said many livestock were also lost while the incidents lasted.

“We are still taking stock of the damage but I can confirm to you that six people lost their lives,” Inga told our correspondent on phone.

He said the Agency was surprised by the amount of rainfall and the storm at the early stage of the season, especially that NIMET report does not contemplate such early occurrence.

Inga stated further that already the state government through the agency has been moving relief items to the victims of the disasters.

He also disclosed further that the Niger state’s Operations office of the Nigeria Emergency Management Agency {NEMA} had already dispatched its team for an on-the- spot assessment of the situation.
