79,000 Nigerians Set To Perform 2017 Hajj

The first batch of the 2017 intending pilgrims departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Abuja at about 3:15pm yesterday onboard Max Air.

Speaking shortly before the inaugural flight, Chairman of the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON), Abdullahi Mukthar Muhammad said about 79,000 intending pilgrims are set to perform the hajj.

He said “This year’s hajj comes with special and peculiar challenges, the challenge of the increase in fares, but by the grace of Allah, we are expecting over 60,000 Nigerians pilgrims, under the state governments’ quota and about 19,000 are expected under the private tour operators’ quota. This number is unprecedented in view of the global recession, which is not only affecting Nigeria but many other countries that will be performing the hajj.”

Mukhtar said over 20,000 pilgrims have so far secured visas and that the rest would get theirs in the coming days, adding that the commission has made necessary arrangement to ensure pilgrims comfort during the exercise.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, represented by the FCT Minister Muhammadu Musa Bello, tasked the pilgrims to be good ambassadors of Nigeria, while in the holy land.

He also called for prayers for the country and for quick recovery of President Muhmmadu Buahri.

Representative of the Sultan of Sokoto, the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Sulaimanu Adamu told the pilgrims to submit themselves to the will of Allah during and after the hajj rites.
