The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Thursday received tonnes of Explosive Ordinance Disposal equipment and tools donated by US Embassy Abuja to the Nigeria Police Force.

Nigeria is battling Boko Haram terror, which claimed estimated 20,000 lives, especially in the country’s North East region.

Several Nigerian forces have died after running into minefield or while defusing explosive devises set by the insurgents.

In June Saudi Arabian Embassy in Abuja had donated 200 tonnes of date fruits to Nigerian refugees displaced by the insurgency.

The Saudi government’s gesture to Nigeria has sparked controversy, following the diversion of the consignment to market.

In July, the House of Representatives wrote to the Federal Commissioner of National Commission for Refugees, Sadiya Farouq, seeking response regarding the alleged diversion of dates to market.

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Khadijah Abba-Ibrahim in a statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Clement Aduku, had apologised over the “unfortunate turn of events”.
