Twenty Five Years Later; He Is “Still The One”.
We met in Maiduguri as youth “corpers” 30 years ago!
Our love blossomed
He is the Muslim who married the girl he loves in the Church.
He is the man who loves me the way I am.
He is the man I went through the Winter years of infertility with, with love, care, support and understanding.
He is the man who will call me; morning, afternoon, night; no matter where he is in the world or wherever I am, without fail.
He is the dad, who spoke to his daughter every morning between 6:15-6:30 am from preschool to elementary in Nigeria, welcomed her back at 5:30 and said goodnight at 8:30; without fail.
He is the father who read to his daughter even over the telephone.
He is the man who tells me it is bedtime and tucks me in, like a baby!
He is the man who is not fastidious about gender roles.
He is the man who has never shouted at me nor say angry or bad words.
He is the man who has stood by me in sickness and in health.
He is the man who puts his family first and provides for every need and want within his means.
He is the in-law every parent pray to have.
He is the brother everyone wants.
He is what is called a gentleman.
Everyone who knows Ademola Olateju will attest to his good nature.
Ours, is a marriage that has gone through tests and remained strong.
I am the acada girl who was not accepted by his family, yet he stood firm!
On this day in 1992, we got married at Methodist Church, Epinmi-Akoko.
Twenty fives years seem like yesterday!
We are growing older.
We are delighted watching the child given to us in the afternoon of our lives grow.
We are growing accustomed to seeing grey hairs on our heads and notice the skin lose its elasticity.
Daily, we pray for good health and the grace to celebrate another 25 years.
While on this journey, I want to thank God for His Mercy, Grace, Favor and Blessings. We are grateful to the Apostle of free marriage who gave my hand in marriage – My dad, Aderemi Awe. He has never regreted his decision. My gratitude goes to the woman who moulded me, my mother – Chief Modupe Awe. My supportive siblings and friends who prayed with us during the locust years. I wake up each day, thankful for the kind of man, God gave me. If you want to understand what unconditional love is, watch this man in our home. Twenty five years later, he is “still the one”!
