Always be careful what you share or what you accept as gospel truth on social media. I came by a well respected retired General last week and he brought out his phone to show me a news item where Jega allegedly claimed to have regretted letting Buhari become President. I told him Jega is not likely to have made such a statement but he never reasoned with men even after I have laboured hard using my journalistic expertise to educate him on indices that make for a true story.
Such is our situation today.
Same last week I woke up to a story that I have quit APC to pursue my ambition under AD , a party do not know still exist. I ordinarily wouldn’t have given any importance to do the falsehood but for the barrage of calls from both the educated and the illiterate, the ignorant and enlightened. There was no content to the story to warrant it being believed but believed it was it was until my campaign organisation issued a statement and our people went on radio, television and the beer parlor s to a lie to the fabrication from Governor Ayo Fayose e-rats. The only factory we have in Ekiti built and financed by our governor is the Lie Factory employing about a hundred ill educated young men and women equipped with android phones and data and supplied with lies to share on social media.
Virtually every decent Nigerian living who is not in the good book of the foreman has been maligned by this shameless people .
From them we had several news pronouncing President Buhari dead, on life support, wanting to turn Nigeria to Islamic State and many unbelievable concoctions.
Let us all beware as we now have a factory for fake news operating in Ekiti and managed by its governor. We must ensure we are not infected by this virus being sent out daily.
The mantra when I was in the newsroom is ‘don’t publish if not sure’ . Today it should be ‘ don’t share if not sure’.
