A former Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party’s Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, on Saturday announced his retirement from partisan politics.

“I am persuaded that I have no more ambition nor any point to prove in politics. I am, therefore, glad to declare that, from today, I shall be withdrawing from active partisan politics. I shall, however, continue to avail the country of my experience, give suggestions and offer advice, as a statesman,” said Anenih during the launch of his autobiography titled, ‘My Life and Nigerian Politics’ at the International Conference Center in Abuja.

Anenih also asked Nigerians to support and pray for President Muhammadu Buhari in order for the administration to succeed.
“I must not end this statement of gratitude without acknowledging the fact that our country is going through difficult times. It is a national predicament which we must confront in unity, irrespective of our partisan commitments, whether PDP, APC, AD or Labour.

“I, therefore, want to urge all Nigerians to persevere and hope for a better tomorrow. We must support and pray that God will give President Muhammadu Buhari the wisdom and vision to steer this country away from recession to prosperity,” he said.

In the new book, Anenih reportedly stated his own side of the story concerning the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election. He was the chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) at the time of the election. M.K.O Abiola who won that election was a member of the SDP.

According to the organisers of the book launch, “Anenih’s narrative captures the various political events and developments that culminated in how Abiola won the presidential election, how the outcome of the June 12 election was annulled midway by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida and how the Interim National Government (ING), set up with Chief Ernest Shonekan as head to conduct another presidential election, was overthrown by Abacha.
