Black Saturday In UK As coronavirus Death Toll Soars

It was a Black Saturday in the UK as another 888 people died after contracting coronavirus.

The new deaths took the UK death toll to at least 15,464, the Department of Health (DoH) has confirmed.

“As of 5pm on 17 April, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 15,464 have sadly died,” the DOH said on its website.

The death toll stood at 14,576 on Friday.

Today’s jump in deaths followed an increase of 847 yesterday and 861 on Thursday.

Out of the figures released Saturday, England recorded 784 deaths.

Scotland reported 56 deaths, while 28 were recorded in Wales and 17 in Northern Ireland.

However, the combined figure from the four nations comes to 885, which is slightly lower than 888 published by the DoH.
