Osinbajo Attends Burial of YCE President, Idowu Sofola In Ikenne

The President, Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Chief Idowu Sofola (SAN), is dead.

The elder statesman, who was born on September 29, 1934, died about 8:00pm on Friday at his Lagos residence.

The renowned jurist was buried in accordance with Islamic rites at his Ikenne-Remo residence amidst encomiums and tributes by prominent Nigerians.

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, former governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and former Chief of Army Staff, General Oladipo Diya, were among the eminent personalities that sympathised with the Sofola family.

Also present were business moguls, Sir Kessington Adebutu; Chief S.O. Babalola, Secretary-General of YCE, Dr Kunle Olajide; industrialist and Asiwaju of Remoland, Chief Solomon Onafowokan; Ambassador Tokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, Professor Olu Sofowora, and former governorship candidate in Lagos State, Jimi Agbaje, among others.

In his tribute written in the condolence register opened by the family, Osinbajo said the late Sofola was a great icon of the legal profession.

“My dear uncle and a great icon of our great profession, you have left shoes to big to fill, but we thank God for your legacies too many to mention. We pray that God will console and comfort us all in Jesus name,” the vice president said.

Amosun, who was among the early callers at the Ikenne-Remo residence of the late Sofola, described the late Senior Advocate of Nigeria as an icon in the legal profession that dutifully served the nation.

According to him, the deceased lived a life of service to his community, the state, Nigeria and the global community.

The governor said with the passing of the late Sofola, the rank of the country’s giants was gradually depleting.

He said: “We are not happy that he (Sofola) has left us at this time and at the same time, we are not mourning his exit from this earth. He lived a good life of service to his community, Ikenne; Ogun State and Nigeria.

“Another of the likes of those giants have gone. They all lived good life. Baba Sofola selflessly served us, not only in Ogun State, but in Nigeria. As humans, we do not want him to go, but who are we to query Almighty Allah.”

It’s Not Fair We Have Too Much Money – Bill and Melinda Gates

Every year, Bill and Melinda Gates release what is known as the Annual Letter, to address issues around their charity and answer some of the toughest questions about their organisation. This year, Seun Akioye looks into the letter and journeys into the mind of the richest people on earth.

The stairway that leads to the office apartments at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) building in Seattle, USA is no ordinary one. There is something about it that stops you on approach and leaves you with only two choices to make: turn back or take the challenge and begin the slow and somewhat long climb, to the top.

On every step are written words which not only define the motivation and driving force of the founders of the foundation but which are also the watchword for the about 1,000 employees that have found a reason to believe and who step into the sprawling edifice every week day.

It reads: “Cynics and Pessimists need not enter. This place is for the impatient optimists. Those who believe nothing is impossible, embrace empathy and never turn from a challenge, no matter how daunting.

“If changing the world excites you, step higher; if tackling issues with rigor is why you get up in the morning, keep climbing.”

The employees who are privileged to “change the world” with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation often call themselves “Impatient Optimists, working to reduce inequality.” These are not mean words or overused cliché, but words of conviction backed up with thousands of “little helpers” working to change public policies, attitudes and behaviours to improve the lives of millions of poor people all over the world. And of course, backed up with billions of dollars.

Impatient Optimists

Many people may assume the co-chair of BMGF, William Henry Gates 111, or Bill Gates as he is globally known only began his charitable works after he had made billions of dollars, a feat which saw him emerging as the richest man in the world for several years.

But the journey into this benevolent philosophy began over 40 years ago, when he began tinkering with computers and finding a way to make it easier for everyone to use. On April 4, 1975, when he opened the doors for Microsoft to begin business alongside his partner Paul Allen, he was fuelled by the spirit of optimism that his new adventure was going to change the world.

He was right, though it was not until August 1995 when the company launched its breakthrough product, Windows 95, that the prospects of a real global impact began to emerge. But 40 years and several billions of dollars later, Gates found another way to achieve his ambition of solving the world’s health, social and economic problems. His new solution is very much different from his world of computers; it was that which touched the most vulnerable in the world. The idea birthed the BMGF, which has since become one of the largest philanthropic organisations in the world.

“It’s not because we think about how we’ll be remembered, we would be delighted if someday diseases like polio and malaria are a distant memory and the fact that we worked on them is too,” Gates once said.

All lives have equal value

Since his retirement from Microsoft, Gates has joined his wife Melinda in the work of pursuing the vision where all lives would have equal value, through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Perhaps eager to throw off the yoke of being seen only as the “richest man in the world,” or the businessman, Gates has thrown all his passion into pursuing his goal of transforming lives, especially in the poorest regions of the world.

Every year – on the advice of Warren Buffet, who has given the most to the foundation – the Gates release a letter tagged the “Annual Letter,” which seeks to answer the toughest questions they are being asked continuously. The letter is also like an assessment of how the foundation has fared the previous year, “ a way of being accountable to the people,” says one foundation staff.

In Nigeria, the foundation has invested hundreds of millions of dollars into making life better for the poor and the unreached, through its six-pronged intervention approach which includes: Eradicating Polio, Improving Family Health, Strengthening Healthcare Systems, Improving Nutrition, Increasing Agricultural Productivity and enhancing access to financial services.

While the foundation has enjoyed tremendous success in Nigeria, it has also come under harsh criticisms, one of which is trying to impose the values and culture of the founders on the country.

“I think the answer is obviously no,” Bill said in the letter. “The idea that children shouldn’t die of malaria or be malnourished is not just our value. It is human value,” he explained.

But the Gates also realised there may be a deeper unasked question about working with the people on the ground and understanding them. “We are acutely aware that some development programs in the past were led by people who assume they knew better than the people they were trying to help. We have learnt over the years that listening and understanding people’s needs from their perspectives is not only more respectful, it is more effective,” Melinda said.

One of the cardinal programmes of the Foundation has to do with saving children’s lives through Routine Immunization (RI). On one level, this may look like a direct contradiction to the foundation’s funding of family planning programs. A tough question that has been asked is: Does saving kid’s lives lead to overpopulation?

Melinda has a perfect answer. “When more children live past the age of five, and when mothers can decide when and if to have children, population sizes don’t go up, they come down. Parents have fewer children when they are confident those children will survive into adulthood.”

But Bill is seeing the demographic dividend. “It can lead to a burst of economic growth. When families have fewer children, eventually a country ends up with relatively more people in the labour force producing economically and relatively fewer dependents.”

Melinda is also passionate about getting women access to contraceptives which can help them space their children. Currently, about 200million women worldwide do not have that access.” For the sake of those women, their children and their communities, we must meet their needs, if we deny access, we are dooming them to a lifetime of poverty, but if we invest in providing access, families will use it to lift themselves out of poverty,” she said.

In Nigeria, the foundation has worked with partners and corporations which some have criticised. But Bill is not seeing it that way, he believes much of the innovations in health and agriculture have come from the private sector. “Poor people should benefit from the same kind of innovation that has improved life in the richest parts of the world,” he said.

Through corporations, the foundation is also funding research into new vaccines, one of which could lead to breakthroughs in HIV and malaria.

Also, corporations are being funded to make existing drugs more available for the Forgotten Tropical Diseases, which affects 1.5 billion people. Also by 2020, at least 1.5 million lives would be saved when the vaccine for pneumococcal disease would be available.

It is not fair we are so rich

Unlike other billionaires; the Gates do not sit behind their mansion thanking their stars they are so rich, but consider it unfair to live in so much wealth while billions of people wallow in poverty. “No, it is not fair that we have so much wealth when billions of others have so little,” Melinda said emphatically.

It is one of the reasons they have devoted their foundation to touching the lives of those who aren’t so fortunate like them and opening doors of opportunities to them. “It is not fair that our wealth opens doors that are closed to most people. World leaders tend to take our phone calls and seriously consider what we have to say,” Melinda acknowledged

But for about 17 years now, it seems the Gates are in a hurry to give away much of their wealth back to humanity. “There are two reasons we do this, one is that it is meaningful work, even before we got married, we talked about how we will eventually spend a lot of time on philanthropy. We think it is the basic responsibility of anyone with a lot of money. Once you have taken care of yourself and your children, the best use of extra wealth is to give it back to society,” Bill explained.

The second part for him is because he has so much fun doing it. “It’s rare to have a job where you get to have both a big impact and a lot of fun,” he said.

Melinda too has an upbringing of giving- a family that believes in leaving the world a better place than they met it. “When Warren Buffet entrusted us with giving away a large portion of his wealth, we redoubled our efforts to live up to the values we share,” she said.

That value has translated to a better life for millions of children in Nigeria either through the fight against polio or those who have received renewed life through food fortification. The value shows in smallholder farmers who are able to better access financial services and the many Primary Health Centers now saving lives and the thousands of women who now make better choices about childbirth.

Dino Melaye Fires Back At Police Insists He’ll Honour Summon In Abuja

Senator Dino Melaye, accused of criminal offences of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, is to be declared wanted.

The Nigeria Police Force is threatening to declare Melaye wanted if he fails to appear at its Kogi command on Wednesday, March 28.

But the senator has written a letter to the Inspector General of Police that he should be interrogated in Abuja.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Jimoh Moshood, in a statement, said an invitation and a court summon had been issued to Melaye, both of which he did not honour.

He said the senator is wanted on grounds of criminal offences of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms.

According to the PRO, Melaye’s summon follows the arrest of two men in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, on January 19, after they confessed to having committed various crimes such as kidnappings and armed robbery.

They also disclosed that the Senator had handed them a bag containing firearms.

“The Police conducted investigation into the criminal indictments against Sen. Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu and discovered that the two of them have case to answer.

“The two suspects namely: Kabiru Saidu a.k.a Osama and NUHU SALISU a.k.a SMALL were paraded at the Kogi State Command Headquarters, Lokoja on 19th March, 2018.”

Moshood noted that a letter was sent to the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki on March 2 asking Melaye to appear before the Kogi state police command headquarters to answer to the allegations against him, yet there was no response.

The Police warned him to show up else, he would be arrested.

“As we speak, Sen. Dino Melaye despite the letter sent to the Senate President, refused to honour Police Invitation till date and also refused to appear in court and has also continued to evade the service of criminal summon on him to appear before the Federal High Court, Lokoja on the 28th March, 2018 to answer to the charge of Criminal Conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms against him and Mohammed Audu.

“The Nigeria Police Force is, therefore, using this medium to advise Senator Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu in their interest to comply with the order of the court and appear on 28th March, 2018 before Federal High Court, Lokoja to answer to the criminal charges against them.

“The Nigeria Police Force will continue to sustain the Rule of Law and maintain Law and Order throughout the Country,” the statement read in part.’’

Meanwhile, the Kogi West senator, says he stands by his position to appear before the police only in Abuja, as he believes his safety cannot be guaranteed in Kogi state.

He made the comments in a letter written by his lawyer on Saturday, in response to a summon by the police, to appear before the command in Kogi state.

The senator also referred to a letter which the lawyer had written to the Inspector General of Police on March 21, in which he outlined several steps taken by the police command in Kogi state which according to him, appeared to indicate that the senator’s life would be in danger.

In the letter, the lawyer made an appeal to the police boss to intervene and allow the senator submit himself to the police in Abuja.

Yolanda, 9, Martin Luther King Jr’s Grandchild Joins Anti-gun Rally

As 800,000 people join the protest in Washington DC

Yolanda Renee King, the nine-year-old granddaughter of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. brought many to tears on Saturday with a surprise appearance at the Washington D.C rally by American students calling for gun control from Congress and President Donald Trump.

“My grandfather had a dream that his four little children will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character,” Yolanda told a rapt crowd.

“I have a dream that enough is enough,” she said, referencing her grandfather’s famous 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech on ending racism.

“And that this should be a gun-free world — period.”.

Demanding action on gun control from lawmakers, more than one million Americans turned out for emotional nationwide protests on Saturday fuelled by teenagers at a Florida high school where 17 people were shot dead last month.

“Politicians, either represent the people or get out,” Cameron Kasky, a 17-year-old from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, told the crowd at a huge rally in Washington.

“Stand for us or beware — the voters are coming,” said Kasky, one of the leaders of a dynamic and passionate student movement which has emerged following the February 14 shooting at his school.

Large crowds also turned out for demonstrations in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, Seattle and other cities — more than 800 in all according to the organizers of the “March For Our Lives.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio said 175,000 people took part at the New York rally, tweeting: “These students WILL change America”.

But the largest protest was in Washington, where organizers told NBC News the crowd was estimated at more than 800,000 people, the largest gun control rally in the United States since the Million Mom March in 2000.

The main stage for the event in Washington was set up near the US Capitol and lawmakers were the target audience as speakers delivered blistering warnings that the time has come for stricter gun laws.

Some of the placards carried by the protesters in Washington DC
“The people demand a law banning the sale of assault weapons,” Kasky said.

“The people demand we prohibit the sale of high-capacity magazines. The people demand universal background checks.”

“We are going to take this to every election, to every state, and every city,” said another Stoneman Douglas student leader, David Hogg.

March organisers included a link for people to register to vote on their MarchForOurLives.com website as they seek to transform their nascent movement into a potent political force.

Signs carried by protestors lambasted lawmakers who oppose tougher laws and the National Rifle Association (NRA), the powerful US gun lobby.

“These kids are right,” said Jeff Turchin, a 68-year-old retired garment manufacturer who came to Washington from New York to attend the rally.

“They’re basically saying the NRA is paying off these Republicans,” Turchin said of the party of President Donald Trump, which controls the Senate and House of Representatives.

The Washington rally kicked off with Andra Day singing “Rise Up” and also featured a performances by Jennifer Hudson, whose mother, brother and seven-year-old nephew were shot dead in 2008.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Emma Gonzalez speaks at the rally
Holding a poster reading “Never Again,” the slogan for the march, Miley Cyrus performed the song “The Climb.”

But the most riveting appearances were by the Stoneman Douglas students.

Emma Gonzalez, 17, took the stage wearing a green military-style jacket and ripped jeans and delivered a eulogy for the 14 students and three adults slain by 19-year-old gunman Nikolas Cruz.

Tears rolling down her face, she then stood in silence at the podium for a full four and half minutes as the crowd fidgeted and some cried out “We’re with you Emma.”

“Since the time that I came out here, it has been six minutes and 20 seconds,” Gonzalez finally said — the exact amount of time Cruz spent spraying bullets inside her school before fleeing.

“Fight for your lives before it’s someone else’s job,” Gonzalez said. “Get out there and vote.”

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle Tour North Ireland Ahead of Wedding

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrived in Northern Ireland unannounced on Friday as part of their pre-wedding tour of the United Kingdom.

The trip was not announced ahead of time in keeping with security procedures used for royal travel to Northern Ireland.

Kensington Palace officials said the couple would meet with young people and other members of the public and would also tour some of Belfast’s most popular sites.

They had lunch at the popular Crown Liquor Saloon, a landmark in central Belfast.

As they toured Northern Ireland, approved commemorative china marking the couple’s May 19 wedding went on sale Friday.

The collection uses cornflower blue with white detailing and a gold monogram of the bride and groom’s initials.

The design also references the couple’s wedding venue at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. The decorative border is based on the ironwork of the 13th century chapel door.

The china is finished in 22 carat gold. It was made by hand in Stoke-on-Trent, 160 miles (260 kilometers) northwest of London, using traditional methods.

Profits will go to the Royal Collection Trust charity.

Rise and Defend Yourselves Against Herdsmen, T.Y Danjuma Urges Nigerians

…Says Armed forces conniving with killers

Retired Lt. General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma has urged Nigerians to defend themselves from killers across the country instead of depending on the armed forces.

Danjuma, a former chief of army staff from 1976-1979, said this yesterday in a live telecast programme of the 10th anniversary of the Taraba State University, Jalingo, as he also made a grave accusation against the armed forces, accusing them of providing cover and defending the killers.

“You must rise to protect yourselves from these people. If you depend on the armed forces for protection, you will all die one by one”, said a visibly angry Danjuma.

“The ethnic cleansing must stop now. Otherwise, Somalia will be a child’s play. I ask everyone of you to be on the alert and defend your country, defend your territory, defend your state because you have nowhere else to go.

“The armed forces are not neutral. They are conniving with the armed bandits that are killing people,” he said.

Danjuma described Taraba as a miniature Nigeria with beautiful cultures which the bandits were doing everything to destroy.

Taraba, the home state of the retired general, had witnessed, like the Middle Belt states of Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, clashes between herdsmen and farmers, leading to many deaths. Herdsmen alleged that about 800 of them were killed on the Mambilla Plateau, a charge the Taraba state government has denied.

There have also been the problems of banditry and cattle rustling in some North Western states, especially Zamfara, which President Muhammadu Buhari visited on Thursday. There he ordered the armed forces to stop the killings all over the country.

Across the country have been reports of either banditry, herdsmen killing farmers or their hosts and kidnapping.

Danjuma’s advice was that all Nigerians should protect themselves, rather than waiting for the armed forces alone to protect them.

Gov Darius Ishaku expressed joy over the growth of the university within a short time, and commended its founding fathers for their foresight.

“The institution has made it possible for many Taraba residents to access tertiary education,” he said, andpledged government’s support toward making it a model.

Prof. Vincent Tenebe, the Vice Chancellor, commended the state government for its continued support which had ensured the growth of the university.

Tenebe said that 5,900 students from five sets were graduating, and urged them to be good ambassadors of the institution.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that honorary doctorate degrees were conferred on Danjuma, Sen. Jeremiah Useni and Gov. Ishaku.

Also honoured with doctorate degrees were Dr. Tony Elumelu, Chairman, Tony Elumelu Foundation, and Prof. Suleiman Bogoro, former Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund.

Danjuma had earlier inaugurated the 6.75-kilometre Magami link road constructed by the Taraba government.

Caverton Helicopters Unveils New Fleet

Following its recent selection as the air transport provider for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation/Chevron Nigeria Limited Joint Venture, Caverton Helicopters Limited has unveiled a fleet of brand new helicopters designed to service the NNPC/CNL JV outfit based in Escravos.

Caverton (CHL) was last year awarded a five-year logistics support contract by CNL, operator of the NNPC/CNL JV, for the provision of aviation services with a two-year renewable option.

The firm is being supported by US aviation giant, Bell Helicopters; the new fleet comprises of the Bell 407 GXP with executive interior design options, fitted with Rolls-Royce engines and the industry workhorse Bell 412 EP, for optimal performance in adverse conditions.

At a business luncheon hosted at its Executive Flight facility at the Murtala Muhammad International Airport, Lagos on Thursday, David Sale, Managing Director, Sales, Middle East and Africa, Bell Helicopters, remarked on being very proud to partner with Caverton, having been in Nigeria since 1964.

CHL Chairman, Adeniyi Makanjuola said the achievement was a result of an extended skills transfer to an indigenous work force over an 8-year period, in line with the national content policy.

According to him, Caverton was fast tracking the national content policy by ensuring that more Nigerians were trained and given priority in recruitment for high technician management positions.

The Director, NNPC/CNL JV, Mr. Monday Ovuede, said Caverton’s unveiling of 11 helicopters marked an expansion of the company’s capacity to dominate the Nigerian airspace – a manifestation of its resilience to ensure that aviation industry became enviable.

“Our plan is to pick and deliver over 800 passengers every day; we will ensure zero accident as we increase our efforts to protect our people. With over 50 years of doing business, I assure you that we will be here in the next 50 years,” he said.

Police Threaten To Declare Senator Dino Melaye Wanted If…

Except he reports to the police on or before Wednesday, 28 March, the Nigeria Police has threatened to declare Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, wanted.

The Kogi State Police Command had written to the senator to appear before it to answer charges of gun running levelled against him by two suspects in police custody.

Jimoh Moshood, the Force Public Relations Officer, in a statement issued on Saturday, disclosed that an invitation and a court summon had been issued to Senator Melaye, both of which he did not honour.

He said the senator is wanted on grounds of criminal offences of conspiracy and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, Channels Television reports.

According to the PRO, Melaye’s summon follows the arrest of two men in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, on January 19, after they confessed to having committed various crimes such as kidnappings and armed robbery.

They also disclosed that the Senator had handed them a bag containing firearms.

The statement read in part: “Working on actionable intelligence, the Kogi State Police Command personnel and operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad trailed and arrested two (2) suspects, namely; KABIRU SAIDU a.k.a OSAMA “31 YRS” From Dekina LGA but based in Anyagba (Leader of the gang) and NUHU SALISU a.k.a SMALL “25 YRS” (a member of the gang), after a gun battle with the Police team that lasted for some hours on the 19th January, 2018 at Ogojueje in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.

“During investigation, they confessed to the various criminal roles they played in the commission of several kidnappings and Armed Robbery, Murder and other Violent Crimes in different parts of Kogi State for which they have been on the wanted list of the Police for more than two years now.

“The gang leader KABIRU SAIDU a.k.a OSAMA revealed that he and his gang have been working as a Political Thug for one Alh. Mohammed Audu a Politician in the State and that Alh. Mohammed Audu invited him to Abuja and introduced him to Senator Dino Melaye and they met on Airport road, Abuja inside the Senator Dino Melaye’s Car in the month of December, 2017.

“KABIRU SAIDU a.k.a OSAMA “31 YRS” further confessed to the Police investigative team that Senator Dino Melaye handed over a bag containing the following firearms one (1) AK47 rifle, two (2) Pump Action guns and the sum of four hundred and thirty thousand naira N430,000.00 to share with his boys.

“The Police conducted investigation into the criminal indictments against Sen. Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu and discovered that the two (2) of them have case to answer. The two (2) suspects namely; KABIRU SAIDU a.k.a OSAMA and NUHU SALISU a.k.a SMALL were paraded at the Kogi State Command Headquarters, Lokoja on 19th March, 2018.”

Speaking further, Moshood noted that a letter had been sent to the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki on March 2 asking Melaye to appear before the Kogi state police command headquarters to answer to the allegations against him, yet there was no response.

The Police, however, warned him to show up else, he would be arrested.

“The Nigeria Police Force is therefore using this medium to advise Senator Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu in their interest to comply with the order of the court and appear on 28th March, 2018 before Federal High Court, Lokoja to answer to the criminal charges against them.

“If they continue to be evasive and fail to comply with criminal summon issued on them by the Federal High Court, Lokoja to appear on 28th March, 2018 to answer to the criminal charges of Conspiracy and Unlawful Possession of Prohibited Firearms against them, the Force, will obtain Warrant of Arrest for the arrest of Senator Dino Melaye and Mohammed Audu and will definitely declare them wanted throughout the country and on INTERPOL platform for them to be arrested in any country where ever they are sighted and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for continuation of their trial.

“The Nigeria Police Force will continue to sustain the Rule of Law and maintain Law and Order throughout the Country,” the statement read in part.
