Visionscape To Take Delivery Of 180 New Trucks, Identifies 5,000 Illegal Refuse Dumps

Visionscape Sanitation Solutions on Friday disclosed that it will take delivery of another 180 new trucks before next month.

The body also disclosed that it had discovered 5,000 black spots across the Lagos metropolis where Lagosians dumped refused illegally.

Speaking at an interactive session with media men in Victoria Island, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, Chief Operations Officer, Visionscape Sanitation Solutions, Thomas Forgacs said currently, Visionscape had 131 trucks at its disposal to cart away refuse in the state.

According to him, before “April, we will receive new batch of 180 trucks,” adding that currently, there were about 15,000 waste bins of 240 litres capacity each and 5,000 waste bins of 1,100 litres capacity each deployed to different spots in Lagos for people to dump their refuse.

He also disclosed that in the second and third batches, 200,000 galvanised waste bins would arrive Lagos in August 2018, adding that before the end of the year, 10 million plastic bags would be distributed across Lagos.

Head of Planning, Visionscape Sanitation Solutions, Kiran Reddy disclosed that the body had identified about 5,000 black spots or illegal dumping sites across the state, saying that it could be more than that.

He said many of these illegal dumping sites had between five and 150 tons of waste being dumped in them, saying that Visionscape had successfully evacuated waste from 2,000 black spots across the state.

Reddy said the body rented about 50 trucks to assist in evacuating the waste from the black spots in order to keep the areas clean.

He added that by mid-April, 300,000 litres containers would be deployed to Lagos to aid refuse collection and disposal.

Also speaking, Head, Corporate Communications, Visionscape, Motunrayo Elias said the body had been in touch with the Waste Collection Operators, WCOs, formerly PSP operators to solve the refuse challenge in Lagos.

She said Visionscape was finally coming to an agreement with the WCOs, adding that the resolution reached with them would be announced in few days time.

Elias added that over 100 companies had joined Visionscape to solve the refuse challenge in the Lagos metropolis, saying that about 200 additional trucks from their partners were currently on the road working to cart away refuse from the metropolis.

“By Easter time, there will be a remarkable difference on the streets of Lagos. We had an agreement with the WCOs and their trucks are working with us now to evacuate waste from the roads,” she said.

Investing Our People, Key To Economic Growth Osinbajo

*Gates commends Buhari administration for “a series of smart policies to encourage private sector investment”

*Nigeria’s growth driven by extracting natural resources and building on that through physical infrastructure, Dangote adds

The successes recorded by its social investment programmes are clear indications that the Buhari administration’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) is making progress, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this during a special session of the National Economic Council (NEC) focused on Human Capital Development, which held today at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The NEC is composed of all state governors and the CBN Governor under the chairmanship of the Vice President.
The special session, which included officials of federal and state governments, was also attended by Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Foundation, and Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
While describing Gates and Dangote as committed and valued philanthropic and development partners, the Vice President thanked them for “uniquely deploying huge resources and innovation through social enterprise to solving some of the most challenging issues of human development that we face today.”

The Vice President further said the social investment programmes, which are a key component of the administration’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), have made significant strides nationwide because of the administration’s political will and vision to make the needed investments, for today and the future.

According to Prof. Osinbajo, “Let me reiterate that not only are we painfully aware of the issues we are prepared to take the challenges you have outlined head-on. Nigeria has strong economic growth and development ambitions, encapsulated in our Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, which we launched in 2017.

“All of those lofty ambitions can only be achieved through the determined application of human skill and effort. And for that effort to be meaningful and productive it has to come from people who are healthy, educated, and who are and feel empowered.”

“It is this realisation that has helped ensure that one of the primary planks of the ERGP is ‘Investing in our people’. And it is for this reason that we are expanding the reach and quality of our healthcare, through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS); and working to guarantee basic education for all persons, whilst also upgrading and modernising the quality of secondary and post-secondary education.
“In 2016 we launched a Social Investment Programme – comprising a jobs scheme for unemployed graduates, a feeding programme for public primary school pupils, a micro-credit scheme for small businesses, and a cash transfer scheme for our poorest and most vulnerable households. This Social Investment Programme, a key component of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, and the most ambitious in Nigeria’s history, aims to ensure that no one is left behind; that Nigeria’s wealth is more equitably distributed to its vulnerable populations: young and old, male and female, regardless of where in the country they live or what language they speak.

Further highlighting the successes recorded, Prof. Osinbajo said, “The school feeding programme currently serves over 7 million school children, across 22 of Nigeria’s 36 states, and continues to grow as more States sign up for it. Apart from the health outcomes – children free from malnutrition and stunting – there are also important educational and economic benefits as well. By guaranteeing one hot meal a day to these children the scheme has pushed school enrolment rates upwards in many of the communities in which it is being implemented.

“Our cash transfer programme, which we’re delivering with the support of the World Bank, makes it imperative for beneficiaries to fulfil certain conditions relating to health or education, before they can receive their monthly stipends. These conditions range from mandatory ante-natal care for pregnant women, to mandatory immunisations for nursing mothers, to minimum school attendance rates for parents of school-age children.

“N-Power, as the jobs-for-graduates component of the Social Investment Programme is known, deploys young Nigerians to work as health and teaching assistants, bringing healthcare and education to more people across the country. We have 200,000 young Nigerians already engaged, and this year we intend to scale that up to 500,000. But the more importantly we are leveraging on the creativity and innovation of our young people.”

In his speech, Bill Gates praised the efforts of the Buhari administration through its economic recovery and growth plan and praised Nigerian’s for having “big dreams and big ambitions”. Noting that Nigeria was now the ‘biggest economy on the continent, Gates said the country was now “rapidly approaching upper middle-income status, like Brazil, China, and Mexico.

Adding that Nigeria has unmatched economic potential, Gates said the Buhari administration’s has taken important steps to fill in gaps in areas of the economy like agriculture, with “both more investment and a series of smart policies to encourage private sector investment.”

“These reforms lay the foundation for a booming agricultural sector that feeds the country, helps end chronic malnutrition, and lifts tens of millions of smallholder farmers. I urge you to build on this,” he said, adding that the FG should increase its investments in health, education, and opportunities that will lay the foundation for sustained prosperity.

“The agricultural sector is a pillar of the Nigerian economy. It accounts for a large proportion of your GDP, and during the oil price collapse and recession, it helped cushion the economy. But it still has a lot of potential to grow,” Gates said.

Also speaking at the event, Dangote noted that human capital was a critical component of Nigeria’s future economic growth.

He said the country has largely achieved growth by extracting natural resources and building on that through physical infrastructure.

He said, “For Nigeria to truly compete globally, we must prioritize investments in the health, education and opportunity of our people alongside other critical areas like infrastructure. Together, these are the inputs that will make Nigeria richer,” he said.

Senate Confirms Aisha Ahmad As CBN Deputy Gov

The Senate yesterday confirmed the nomination of five out of the six appointees of President Muhammadu Buhari for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

While the duo of Aisha Ahmad and Edward Adamu were confirmed as Deputy Governors of the CBN, the trio of  Professor Adeola Festus Adenikinju; Dr Aliyu Rafindadi Sanusi and Dr Robert Chikwendu Asogwa were confirmed as members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC).

The confirmation followed the consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate committee on Banking, Insurance and other financial institutions chaired by Senator Rafiu Ibrahim (APC,Kwara).

Our correspondent reports that to fast track the transmission of the confirmation to the presidency, the Senate approved the votes and proceedings of yesterday. The Senate adjourned for 10 minutes and returned to approve the votes and proceedings.

The committee’s recommendation that Dr Asheikh A. Maidugu, a nominee for the MPC be rejected was unanimously approved. Maidugu, is a serving director of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

Senator Ibrahim said: “ The nominee was interviewed by the Committee and he responded to the questions asked by the Members but the Committee was dissatisfied with his response to the independence required for each Member of the MPC.

“ Concerned that a regular Civil Servant Iadened with bureaucracy and red-tapism may not be independent in his judgment on each crucial decision of the MPC that affect directly the whole economy.”

Senate leader, Ahmad Lawan drew the attention of the senate to the fact that a quorum has not been formed in the MPC with Maidugu’s rejection.

He urged his colleagues to allow for the consideration of the board members of the CBN, saying two members of the MPC are among the board nominees.

In his remark, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki said the confirmation of the nominees was in line with the promised made last week.

He said the issue of the board members of the CBN that are still pending would be looked at next week.

“ I am sure it will boost the morale within the institution. I want to congratulate the management and Mr. President, and all those who have been involved in this entire process.

“ We hope that the two new Deputy Governors will work with the Governor to move the country and our economy in the right direction. We hope also, that you all will continue to work closely with the National Assembly to update us on the progress that is achieved by the Central Bank,” he said.

With the confirmation, the CBN would hold MPC meeting early April for the first time in 2018 after suspension of the Janauary meeting due to lack of quorum.

Dino Melaye Is A Noisemaker – Yahaya Bello

The governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has hit at Senator Dino Melaye for mocking him in a recent video, describing the lawmaker as a noisemaker.

He said this in an interview with State House correspondents on Thursday.

He said: “Kogi state is a very complex state and I took it over when things were really bad and I’m doing my best to ensure that we give quality service to the good people of Kogi state. So, any noisemaker out there is just disturbing himself. So, I just focused on the job as the executive governor of Kogi state, and I’m doing my best and the people of Kogi state really appreciate my services to them.”

He described the recent killings in his state as very pathetic situation “where about 12 people were killed and I visited that place. It is a place that was neglected by their own people and it was unfortunate that that incident happened and we have constituted Judicial Panel of Inquiry to look into the immediate and remote cause of that attack because this is not the first time that an attack is happening in that particular area.

“In 2014 it happened where lives and property were destroyed but thank God with the support of the military, police and other security agencies were able to quickly move into action and then that particular incident had been stopped.

We’re Not Against Buhari’s 2019 Ambition – British High Commissioner

Paul Arkwright, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, has said his country or any other Western nation was not against a second term by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mr Arkwright’s response follows speculations that the UK was planning to prevail on Mr Buhari to step down ahead of 2019 presidential election.

“I am very happy to put that rumour to bed. The United Kingdom supports a process whereby the people of Nigeria can exercise their democratic right to vote,” he told Premium Times on Thursday.

Mr Arkwright, however, did not say whether he knew Mr Buhari would run, but insisted that UK would not favour him over his opponents and vice versa.

“All of Nigeria should feel that they have a part to play in the democratic process. I encourage people to go out and get their PVCs.

“Who they vote for is a matter for their conscience and not for the United Kingdom government. Whichever candidate is standing, they need to make up their minds and decide who would best suit them.

“And that’s an individual choice. We favour a free, fair, credible and peaceful process and we’re working with INEC to make that happen,” Mr Arkright said.

Olujimi Blasts Fayose Over Ado-Ekiti Demolition

The senator representing Ekiti South, Mrs. Biodun Olujimi, has condemned the demolition of houses in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, by Governor Ayodele Fayose.

Mrs Olujimi, who is a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant, said physical development is a welcome development but should be done with a human face.

The Deputy Senate Minority Whip expressed misgivings yesterday in a statement by the Director General of her campaign organisation, Chief Bunmi Olugbade.

Although the senator hailed Fayose for initiating urban renewal, Mrs Olujimi said: “Any development that will cause the citizens tears and hardship will usually backfire and provoke negative reactions.”

The senator noted that the current demolition was ill-timed since it was happening when workers and pensioners were owed arrears of salaries and benefits, “Ekiti being a civil service state”.

Mrs. Olujimi said: “In advanced democracies, government will do enumeration and valuation of compensation to be paid to those who will be affected by such demolition, provide temporary accommodation for them and give them enough time to relocate before demolition.

“I want to appeal to those who are affected and I want to promise that the PDP government under my leadership will put smiles on the faces of the people rather than tears.

“Finally, I want to appeal to the people of Ekiti State to embrace PDP’s continuity agenda of ensuring that a PDP government is installed rather than a third-term agenda of an individual.”

On Wednesday, Fayose visited some families affected by the demolition in Ijoka area of Ado-Ekiti.

It was learnt that the governor said a compensation package was being worked out, but the affected house owners maintained that they wanted full compensation and not peanuts.
Many residents of the town, who have been displaced by the demolition, said they were forced to relocate to other places.

The beleaguered residents are relocating to places like Odo, Fagbohun, Ajebamidele, Oke Ureje, Emirin, Afao Road and Ilokun.

One of them, who spoke in confidence, said: “We have valid land documents, like building plan and survey plan, and we will need full compensation to build our houses elsewhere.

Bill Gates Foundation’s Investment In Nigeria Hits $1bn

Mr Bill Gates, the Co-Chair, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation says his Foundation has invested more than one billion dollars in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Gates said this on Thursday in Abuja when he led a delegation from the Foundation to meet with the Minister of Finance on vaccines financing programme in Nigeria.

“Our  Foundation has invested over one billion dollars in Nigeria, mostly in health and we are very committed to global development.

“We want to discuss vaccine financing and the issue of how we can be effective as partners for the health resources to grow over time.’’

Gates said that the Foundation was also in discussion with the Nigerian Minister of Health, to support local production of vaccines.

He urged the government to seek private sector support in this regard.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun thanked the Bill Gates Foundation for its investment in vaccines and other primary healthcare services in the country.

She said that the government had inaugurated the campaign to improve tax collection so as to boost its domestic resources and reduce its over dependence on donour agencies.

“As government, we are very committee to solving our health care challenges. We feel that there is enough potential revenue and actual revenue in this country to fund these priorities and they must be funded.

“We are committed to that, from domestic mobilisation perspective because we have the lowest tax to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio in the world and we are doing something about it.

“We are trying to get more people involved in tax payment so that we can fund basic health care.

“There is no way around it because no matter how much support we get from donours, we must have structures to be able to meet these basic obligations,’’ she said.

Adeosun said that the government was also looking into local production of vaccines to create jobs and also save foreign exchange.

She said one of the problems of the government in terms of improving healthcare was not necessarily money, but rather accurate data to know exactly where that money would make the most impact.

Adeosun said that improving financial inclusion would translate to improved data collection on access to health as well as improve primary healthcare service in the country. (NAN)

Leah Sharibu Will Not Be abandoned – Buhari Assures

President Muhammadu Buhari is as committed to the freedom of the only Dapchi schoolgirl still in captivity as he was to the girls’ freedom when all 110 were in the captivity of Boko Haram terrorists, the presidency said Thursday.

The Buhari administration will not relent in efforts to bring Leah Sharibu safely back home to her parents as it has done for the other girls after she was held back by the terrorists over her decision, as reported, not to convert from Christianity to Islam.

President Buhari is fully conscious of his duty under the constitution to protect all Nigerians, irrespective of faith, ethnic background or geopolitical location and will not shirk in this responsibility.

The President is equally mindful of the fact that true followers of Islam all over the world respect the injunction that there is no compulsion in religion.

To this effect, no one or group can its religion on another.

His heart goes out to the isolated parents who must watch others rejoice while their own daughter is still away.

The lone Dapchi Girl, Leah, will not be abandoned, the president assured, the statement said.

“President Buhari assures the Sharibu family that he will continue to do all he can to ensure that they also have cause to rejoice with their daughter soon,” Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media & Publicity, added in the statement.

Grilled and Over-cooked Meat, Chicken, Fish Increase Hypertension Risk – Scientist

A new study urges caution when cooking, after finding that a regular intake of grilled and well-done meat, chicken or fish could increase the risk of high blood pressure.

Researchers suggest that how we cook our meat may influence our hypertension risk.

The new research was led by Gang Liu, Ph.D., of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, will occur when the force of blood that pushes against the wall of the arteries becomes too high. This can increase the risk of stroke, heart attack, and heart disease.

Since updated blood pressure guidelines came into play in the United States last year, it is now estimated that almost half of adults across the country have hypertension.

An unhealthful diet is known to be a major risk factor for hypertension. The new study, however, suggests that it’s not just the type of food that we eat that influences blood pressure; how we prepare our food can also play a part.

Previous studies have documented the many potential harms of consuming meats cooked at high temperatures. One study reported by Medical News Today last year, for example, linked a high intake of grilled, smoked, or barbecued meats to a 23 percent greater risk of death for breast cancer survivors.

Research has also associated foods cooked at high temperatures with a greater risk of heart disease.

For this latest study, Liu and colleagues sought to determine whether the cooking temperature or doneness of meat and fish — that is, how well they are cooked through — might influence blood pressure.

To reach their findings, the researchers analysed the data of 32,925 women who were a part of the Nurses’ Health Study, 53,852 women who took part in the Nurses’ Health Study II, and 17,104 men who participated in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study.

“Our findings suggest that it may help reduce the risk of high blood pressure if you don’t eat these foods cooked well-done and avoid the use of open-flame and/or high-temperature cooking methods, including grilling/barbecuing and broiling.”

For each study, information was collected on how much meat and fish the subjects consumed each month, as well as how these foods were cooked and their levels of doneness.

At baseline, none of the participants had high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or cancer. Over an average follow-up period of 12–16 years, a total of 37,123 participants developed hypertension.

The team found that subjects who ate grilled, broiled, or roasted beef, chicken, or fish at least 15 times each month were 17 percent more likely to develop high blood pressure than those who consumed these foods fewer than four times per month.

Among participants who reported preferring their meat well-done, the risk of hypertension was increased by 15 percent, compared with those who preferred their meat rarer.

HAAs and hypertension

The scientists also estimated the levels of heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) consumed by each subject. HAAs are potentially harmful compounds that are produced when meats are cooked at high temperatures.

The study reveals that participants who consumed higher levels of HAAs were at 17 percent greater risk of high blood pressure, compared with those who consumed lower levels of the compounds.

Notably, the study revealed that the links between hypertension, cooking method and temperature of cooking, and doneness of meat were independent of the type of foods that subjects consumed and how much they ate.

Explaining the possible mechanisms behind their findings, Liu says that HAAs and other chemicals produced by high-temperature cooking may lead to oxidative stress, inflammation, and insulin resistance, which can raise the risk of hypertension.

While this research cannot prove cause and effect, the team says that to lower blood pressure, it might be worth revising our cooking methods for meat and fish.

“Our findings suggest that it may help reduce the risk of high blood pressure if you don’t eat these foods cooked well-done and avoid the use of open-flame and/or high-temperature cooking methods, including grilling/barbecuing and broiling.”
