Falz Releases New Hit Single, “Talk”

Nigerian singer and rapper Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has started the New Year with the release of his single tagged “Talk”.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the video of the song, which is directed by Prodigeezy, features Falz driving alongside his guys with different scenes relating to the lyrics played out.

‘Talk’ is a socio-conscious record that addresses critical happenings and advises the youths to be wary of ‘greedy politicians.’

As the 2019 general election draws near, the artiste uses lyrics of the song to address critical leadership issues and advised Nigerians, especially the youths, to speak up for what they truly want.

Falz, now popularly known by industry watchers as a ‘Music Activist’, had earlier hinted fans that he would release an album titled ”Moral Instruction” on Jan. 15.

He said of the album: “There is a dire need for us to redefine the concept of humanity and morality.

“There is a pressing need for re-education and re-orientation of the people, for this is the only way we can restore sanity.”

NAN reports that Falz, a lawyer turned singer, began his professional career as a music artiste in 2009, and currently owns an independent record label called Bahd Guys Records.

He is the son of Femi Falana, a Nigerian human rights activist and lawyer.

The music artists came to limelight after his song “Marry Me” (featuring vocals from Poe and Yemi Alade) won him a nomination in the “Best Collaboration of The Year” category at the 2015 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

In 2018, Falz released a controversial audio/visual song “This Is Nigeria”, a mock-up of American rapper Childish Gambino’s “This Is America”.

It addresses societal issues prevalent in Nigeria, including SARS brutality, codeine abuse, and killings in some parts of the country.

The video of the song highlights the nation’s issues  especially violence and corruption in politics, policing, and religious bigotry.

The song was, however, banned by National Broadcasting Commission, NBC.

More PDP Members Dump Atiku, Join APC

Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar have lost another staunch member.

Latest on the list of defectors is Atiku’s North-East Campaign Director General, Senator Saidu Umar Kumo.

Kumo was at the campaign headquarters of All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday to pledge his support.

A tweet by the spokesman of President Muhammadu Buhari’s Campaign Council, Mr Festus Keyamo said:

“The game is on! After recent mass defections of PDP leaders of North-East to join PMB’s train, today the latest convert, Atiku’s North-East Campaign DG, Senator Saidu Umar Kumo (standing to my left) was at our Campaign h/q to pledge his support! Then, the trending 4+4 followed!’’

The game is on! After recent mass defections of PDP leaders of North-East to join PMB’s train, today the latest convert, Atiku’s North-East Campaign DG, Senator Saidu Umar Kumo (standing to my left) was at our Campaign h/q to pledge his support! Then, the trending 4+4 followed!

Last week, the suspended Deputy National Chairman of PDP, Sen. Babayo Gamawa and a member of the party’s Board of Trustees, Kaulaha Aliyu, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The two defecting top members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were received at the presidential villa by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The defection of the PDP bigwigs from Bauchi State came barely 24 hours after the president received various members of the Peoples Democratic Party’s Support Groups from the North East, who defected to the ruling APC.

The defectors who were accompanied by Governor Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi state, met behind closed doors with President Buhari for about 35 minutes.

President Buhari had on Monday also received delegation of the North East political stakeholders including the defectors led by Umar Bukar Bolori, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The defectors included the former governor of old Borno state, Alhaji Mohammed Goni and a onetime deputy governor of Adamawa, Alhaji saad Tahir.

India Set To Hold Guinness World Sanitary Pad Record

Participants at a medical congress in India have set a new Guinness World Record for the longest line of sanitary pads, in a move aimed at promoting menstrual hygiene.

Five hundred people at the 62nd All India Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (AICOG) took seven and a half hours to lay out 10,105 sanitary pads in a line 1,078 metres (3,537 feet) long.

The feat in the southern Indian city of Bangalore, verified by Guinness World Record officials, also included the shape of a uterus under the slogan “Nothing’s more cuterus than your uterus”.

“Sanitary pads are required for every woman for her hygiene. Hygiene is so important otherwise they will have lot of pelvic infections, urinary infections and all those problems are there,” gynaecologist Geeta Pramod Shanbhag told AFP.

According to a National Family Health Survey (NFHS) report published in 2017, only 58 percent of women in India aged 15 to 24 use a hygienic method of menstrual protection, the Hindu daily reported.

In July India withdrew a controversial tax on sanitary pads following a vocal campaign led by activists and Bollywood stars to boost female education and empowerment.

One study by WaterAid and UNICEF found that more than a third of girls in South Asia missed school during their periods.

How FirstBank Is Making Customers Stay-Connected Through Its e-Channels

BY FUNKE OSAE-BROWN

Folarin is a smart entrepreneur who is in touch with technological advancement and the digital age. He has different apps on his mobile phone which he uses to organise both his business and private lives.  He has a food app which he uses to order for his breakfast and lunch, he has another one that takes care of his love for music and another which he uses to manage his transactions online without stepping into a bank. He tells me, his bank is forward looking and futuristic enough to make banking easy for him and his clients.

“I have been banking with FirstBank since I was in school as an undergraduate, says Folarin. My mum opened the account for me. That was where she sent my monthly allowance.  After school, I didn’t close the account I simply continued with the tradition.”

It was not difficult for Folarin to decide he would open his corporate account with FirstBank when he started his business a few years ago. He says the ease at which he gets his transactions done on FirstBank’s application, FirstMobile, endears him to the bank.

“I can do many transactions with FirstMobile. I can do bank transfers, check my balance, receive alerts on any transaction I do. There is also a beneficiary section that enables me save the account numbers of people close to me for future transactions.”

The FirstMobile App has over the years offered succour to FirstBank customers.

Folake Ani-Mumuney, Group Head, Marketing & Corporate Communications, FirstBank says “FirstBank wanted a truly branchless experience for its customers and thus enhanced the app to deliver an instant, remote, self-enrolment feature. Hence, in 2015, onboarding process on FirstMobile was improved with self-service feature; empowering customers to remotely complete their onboarding process on the App without visiting a branch.”

In addition, Chuma Ezirim, Group Head, e-Business, First Bank of Nigeria Limited said the soft token was also launched to satisfy the needs of customers who did not want to carry the hard token about. “It serves the same purpose as the hard token but provides the advantage of convenience and mobility as it is installed in the customer’s mobile phone,” he noted.

Another interesting digital service platform by FirstBank is the FirstBillsPay, a biller aggregator platform. It aggregates various billers through a secured connection to the bank, to avail its customers a single payment point for all bills from their accounts.

“In addition to FirstMobile and FirstBillsPay is FirstCheckOut. This is an additional payment option that can be integrated to merchant website that will allow customers pay bills directly from their bank accounts as a substitute to cards. We also have the 894 USSD Quick Banking service as part ofour financial inclusion drive. The *894# USSD service makes banking services available across all GSM networks, on any type of device, anywhere and at any time; this gives it a unique selling point,” explained Ezirim.

There are also the Emerging Channels (USSD Collections, mCash, MVISA). These platforms are to ensure FirstBank gets its customers connected in a seamless way in the digital driven age.

“Our FirstBank mVisa is an innovative mobile payment solution that allows consumers to pay for goods and services via FirstMobile by scanning a QR code using a smart phone or by dialing a USSD number on a phone. Payment goes directly from the consumer’s account into the merchant’s account and both parties get real-time notification.  The USSD Collections allow merchants to receive payments from customers simply by using 894 USSD string for FirstBank customers. The focus segments for USSD Collections are Manufacturing/FMCGs/ Value Chain Businesses, Petrol Stations, Network Marketing Companies, Transporting Companies, Churches, Schools and others,” says Ezirim.

Furthermore, FirstBank Agent banking was launched towards the end of 2017. The bank recruited Firstmonie Agents and empowered them to carry out basic financial services within their vicinity.  Firstmonie Agents are literally human extensions of almost all the banking activities, they are strategically positioned within communities with large population of unbanked and underbanked individuals. With the large network of Firstmonie Agents spread across the length and breadth of the country, financial inclusion is significantly promoted by FirstBank.

Now, the new kid on the block for FirstBank is the chat banking on WhatsApp. With this, FirstBank’s customers can leverage on the real-time messaging capabilities of the WhatsApp Business solution to check their account balances as well as perform simple banking queries.

“Customers’ expectations are constantly changing and it’s our duty as a customer focused bank to ensure that our customers are provided with the means to carry out banking services through any channel they desire,” says Ezirim. “We are constantly seeking new ways and opportunities to meet customers at their preferred touch points and we understand our customers are actively engaged on WhatsApp.”

With FirstBank chatbanking on WhatsApp, it is not just about staying connected with friends and loved ones, but also keeping in touch with FirstBank anytime and anywhere you are.

Tribute To Chief Frank Odunayo Akinrele, SAN

By Bashorun J.K. Randle

When in the matter of Chief Frank Odunayo Akinrele, SAN and Mrs. Ibidun Akinrele, the learned silk pronounced judgement in open court:

“I have fulfilled all my obligations”

at his beloved wife’s 80th birthday on 5th April 2018, those of us who do not belong to the learned profession expected both Ademola Akinrele, SAN (alas an old boy of St. Gregory’s College!!) and Adedolapo Akinrele, SAN to immediately lodge an objection and proceed to file papers to appeal the matter directly to the Supreme Court on the grounds that Chief Frank Akinrele, SAN should have been restrained from pronouncing judgement in a matter in which there was clearly profound conflict of interest. For the benefit of lay men and women, it has been firmly established as a fundamental principle of law that you cannot approbate and reprobate.

For this lapse, we must hold Ademola “The Gregorian” responsible!!

He did not even lodge a preliminary objection nor an ex parte motion demanding a retraction compelling Chief Akinrele, SAN to continue the excellent work he had been doing for several decades – as a loving husband, devoted father, inspirational mentor, rock solid confidant and unblemished role model.

Perhaps the court would be minded to pursue vigorous enquiry regarding what would appear to be an oversight on the part of Chief Akinrele who may have vicariously permitted Ademola to attend St. Gregory’s College, instead of his own Alma Mater, King’s College, Lagos.

It is on record that all the three brothers of Uncle Frank – Christopher Olufemi Akinrele; Dayo Akinrele; and Marshall Olatunde Akinrele attended King’s College where they all excelled. They were simply brilliant. Both Dayo and Marshall graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University.

The phenomenal academic achievements of Uncle Frank at King’s College, starting with double promotion in his first year, have been preserved for posterity.

Hence, it was no surprise that he earned spectacular laurels at University of Hull where he obtained an LL. B. degree in 1953 (at the age of twenty-three). Eyimofe Atake, SAN has availed the court of his evidence in chief:

“At Hull University he was awarded the Andrew Marvell Prize for the best graduating law student.”

This was followed by an LL. M. from the same university in 1954.

With consummate ease, Uncle Frank bagged bountiful commendations from his peers:

i.) Late Hon. Justice Adewale Thompson (in his book “REMINISCES”): “F.O. Akinrele was the most brilliant junior of our time”

ii.) Late Hon. Justice Franklin Atake

“F.O. Akinrele is one of the best Criminal Law Lawyers in Nigeria”

It is almost tempting (at the risk of being charged with contempt of court) to challenge the late Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Sir Darnley Alexander, SAN; GCON; KBE who persuaded Uncle Frank to apply for silk (the elevated rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria).

His Lordship should have directed his energy and his court to serving a bench warrant on Chief Frank Odunayo Akinrele to join the bench. The judiciary would have been abundantly enriched and our nation would have been better served.

Another missed opportunity was when Uncle Frank retired at the age of 56 and proceeded to spend the next thirty-two years on learning French, playing the piano, boating and annual cruises in the company of his wife and Ambassador and Mrs. Omotayo Ogunsulire. We can only speculate and savour the difference such a brilliant mind would have made to the bench either at the Appeal Court or the Supreme Court.

Rather than insist on a cogent answer to the question:

“But Why Was He Missing From The Bench?”,

Time and space compel me to confine my tribute to recalling my first encounter with late Chief Frank Akinrele when in our final year (1963), I was one of several King’s College students who bumped into him as he emerged from his law office on Bamgbose Street, in central Lagos. We exchanged the traditional greeting of “FLOREAT!!”. Waiting for him was his sleek, brand- new, long-wheel based American limousine. It was either a Chevrolet or Pontiac. He was wearing his King’s College tie and he greeted us warmly. We owe him our eternal gratitude for the impromptu message he delivered – you too can own a car like this provided you work hard with integrity, confidence and zeal as your guiding principles.

At the Lagos Motor Boat Club, Uncle Frank would regale us with those landmark cases which appear to have been relegated into the realm of our collective amnesia – the Apalara murder case; Njemanze murder case; Abakaliki ritual murder; Alphonse and Abayomi murder case; and many others. He recalled everything with clinical precision even though almost fifty years had lapsed. He was also very much involved with the investigation of the U.S. $2.8 billion which was alleged to be missing from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

I leave it to history to judge how and why we missed the red flags. About three years ago, Uncle Frank surprised me when he declared that for almost a decade, he had not travelled out of Nigeria – not even to go on his annual cruises or vacation in Chelsea, London where he had owned a swanky pair of flats for several decades. According to him, he found all the hazards of going through the airport, customs, immigration, passport control etc. too tiresome and energy sapping.

Without attempting to tamper with the court records, we must accept both circumstantial and substantive evidence from Uncle Frank:

“My wife was only twenty-one years old when we got married and we have been happily married for fifty-eight years. She has been my soul mate and I remain eternally grateful for her love and devotion. We have been blessed with four children – Ademola, Adedolapo, Olufemi and Adebayo and numerous grandchildren – whose ages range from five to thiry years.”

As you are all aware, Uncle Frank was the victim of a freak accident at the Lagos Motor Boat Club on 29th August 2018 while attempting to retrieve his mobile phone which had dropped from his hand when he was seated on a chair. The result was a fractured hip which required surgery. Sadly, he never fully recovered.

The timing of the demise of Chief Frank Odunayo Akinrele, SAN on Christmas Day when King’s College Old Boys (KCOB’s) were hoping that the spate of deaths of KCOB’s in 2018 had been finally halted is a severe blow. The catalogue of attempted “genocide” is under investigation by the police – Dr. Alex Ekwueme [aged 85]; Prince Adedapo Adeniran [aged 94]; Chief Tunji Gomez [aged 90]; Chief Allison Ayida [aged 88] and now Chief Frank Akinrele [also aged 88] – all of them very distinguished old boys of King’s College. We all know where the finger of suspicion is pointing!!

Regardless, we shall not present before the court damning evidence – when the freak accident occurred, the nearest doctor was an old boy of St. Gregory’s College. Good grief!! I am not at liberty to disclose his name. It is up to him to volunteer the information.

It was inevitable that the freak accident would engage the attention of social media. Perhaps, that was what prompted a Professor of Law at Stanford University to interject that if the accident had occurred in California, the police would have invaded the scene and cordoned it off with yellow tape in addition to seizing both the phone and the chair for forensic investigation. Thereafter, the legal process (criminal or civil) would commence – starting with the chair being subjected to laboratory tests by experts in ergonomics. Having regard to the fact that Chief Akinrele was a Trustee and former Commodore while Ademola, the Gregorian is a former Commodore of the Lagos Motor Boat Club, there is no chance that matters would proceed beyond accepting the will of the Almighty.

At Chelsea Football Club, those players who are relegated to the bench are those who cannot make the first eleven. In the case of Uncle Frank, he was in a class of his own. All the more reason why “The Gregorian” should have employed his abundant persuasive skills to steering his superstar father towards the bench – either local or international.

While we mourn the loss of a rare gem, the bench is still being kept warm for either Ademola and/or Adedolapo as well as Adebayo.

Truly, Chief Akinrele is fully entitled to the swan song:

“I Did It My Way” except that he never got round to writing his autobiography for which he had ample time following his retirement from the practice of law in 1986.

As for politics, he had a pretty dim view of Nigeria’s brand of politics and even dimmer view of our avaricious politicians whose incompetence and unscrupulousness he found most nauseating and baffling. He had come to the conclusion that the damage done to our national character has become irreversible.

What is beyond dispute is that he was an encyclopaedia endowed with vast knowledge and wisdom nurtured and nourished by his insatiable intellectual curiosity. He was always abreast of international affairs.

Not only was he a quintessential gentleman, his sense of humour was legendary. He was a raconteur extraordinaire.

It was consistent with his large heartedness that he readily supported my campaign as the next president of St. Gregory’s College Old Boys Association. The case is now in court!!

When I presented him with the video tape of my posters being pulled down within the college premises and beyond; manipulation of the primaries; stuffed ballot boxes; compromised electoral officers; doctored list of eligible voters; announcement of wrong results; election being conducted after midnight and intimidation/harassment of my teeming supporters – all in an effort to rig me out, the great Chief was in top form:

“Election in Nigeria is not cricket!!”

Now that our nation is in disarray with insurgency, kidnapping, ritual murder and treasury looting as the order of the day is precisely when we desperately need a much longer life for the great Ondo Chief.

The national newspapers have today 3rd January 2019 provided us with proof of evidence on their front page:

i.) “ThisDay”

“We Are Under Armed Bandits’ Siege, Governor Of Katsina State, Alhaji Aminu Masari Cries Out.”

“Our state is currently under serious siege by armed robbers, kidnappers and armed bandits, who arrest rural people at the grassroots at will and demand ransom, which if not paid, they kill their victims”

ii.) “Nigerian Tribune”

“Katsina Under Siege, Governor Cries Out”

iii.) “Vanguard”

“Nobody’s safe in Katsina now, Gov Masari cries out”

Says state under siege by bandits, kidnappers, armed robbers

Discloses electricity poles stolen in front of Government House

Visitors to Governor trailed, robbed after visit

It was his call but he chose to draw the curtain with the blessing of the Almighty at the ripe old age of 88. When Chief Akinrele was rushed to the hospital following his accident, the admission nurse enquired: “How old are you sir?” In spite of his considerable pain, in the tradition of King’s College he replied: “Two fat ladies” (in Bingo lingo it translates as 88!!).

If only the Gregorian had lodged his objection, the great chief would have felt compelled to tarry a while longer – to dust of his abandoned wig and gown and show up in court to defend himself no matter for how long the case would drag on.

Even in his old age he could sing the King’s College song: “Floreat Collegium” flawlessly. He had taken to heart the command: “When the call is sounded, we must all answer HERE!!”.

From all accounts, Chief Frank Akinrele was a very patient man. It was to no avail he awaited a counter motion or summons of the court.

In the end, he delivered his final goodbye to his family and friends with the cryptic message: “I rest my case. The storm is over.”

The burial of Chief Akinrele is scheduled for next week. In the meantime, it seems inconceivable to venture into the ambience of the Lagos Motor Boat Club in the evening without immediately sighting the late Chief at his usual table reading the latest edition of the French newspaper “Le Monde”. One salutary lesson has emerged from the demise of the much adored Chief Akinrele, at the Lagos Motor Boat Club, old boys of King’s College now sit only on benches (not chairs!!) and they check that no old boy of St. Gregory’s College is lurking in the vicinity. They also leave their phones at home or in the car.

On a final note, a few months ago Chief Olufemi Majekodunmi (ex- St. Gregory’s College) and I were in the midst of a heated argument over his handling of the Chief J.K. Randle Memorial Hall when Mrs. Ibidun Akinrele walked in. Without prior consultation, we simultaneously declared that if there was a competition for the family with the most courteous and respectful children, the first prize would go to the Akinrele family. Rather than start an even more heated argument, I refrained from telling Olufemi that the prize already belonged to J.K. Randle.

May the soul of Chief Frank Akinrele rest in perfect peace.

Lagos Times Honours Oba Elegushi For Contribution To Culture and Tradition

It was fun and encomiums galore at the prestigious LagosTimes Excellence Award 2018 as flamboyant Elegushi of Ikateland, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla III was honoured for his contributions to culture and tradition in the state.

The chairman of the awards committee, Mr. Victor Ganzallo disclosed that the monarch who reigns over the scenic kingdom of Ikate in Eti-Osa Local Government was the unanimous choice of the awards committee due to his meritorious efforts to uphold local culture and revive dying traditions of the people.
While presenting the award to Oba Elegushi, Ganzallo remarked that the traditional ruler’s unparalleled commitment to Yoruba culture and tradition was made more incredible due to the extra burden placed on him as a young man occupying a seat usually reserved for hoary heads.
Such unique virtues and burning passion, he remarked, were what elevated Oba Saheed above his peers on the shortlist who had been carefully chosen as standard bearers of change and impact in Lagos State, especially in the areas of culture and tradition. Men and women whose assiduous desire to positively uplift the lives of the people has transformed them into icons and beacons of positive change worthy of emulation.
Meanwhile, Oba Elegushi, who is fast rising in the ranks of the most impactful monarchs of this generation, was full of humility as he thanked the organizers LagosTimes for the honour bestowed on him even as he emphasized the critical role played by teachers, and especially parents, in the preservation of culture and tradition.
“The preservation of our culture and tradition lies solely with us as parents; we must not abdicate that duty to the teachers in school. Our children are our future and the only way to preserve our culture is to teach them about it early,” he said.
He also took the opportunity to castigate the large number of people who look down on cultural practices, dismissing them as ill-informed and lacking in critical judgment. He urged them to take their time to look closely rather than swallowing hook, line and sinker, the western propaganda against African cultural practices.
Also at the award presentation were two of Oba Elegushi’s chiefs, the Eletu of Ikate Kingdom, Chief Babalola Elegushi and the Olisa of Ikate Kingdom, Chief Moruf Adisa Elegushi. The publisher of LagosTimes, Mr Kayode Alfred was also present at the event as well as Mrs. Eyitayo Talabi, also a member of the award team.
The LagosTimes Excellence Awards is dedicated to recognizing and appreciating people and organizations, whose efforts have directly or indirectly contributed to the growth and development of Lagos State in various fields.

Women Have Rejected Atiku, Jimi Agbaje In Lagos – Jumoke Okoya-Thomas

The Women Leader of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Jumoke Okoya-Thomas has declared that the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos, Jimi Agbaje have been rejected by women in the state.

Speaking to newsmen on the backdrop of the 2019 General Elections on Tuesday, Okoya-Thomas added that she would not relent in her efforts of mobilising the women in the state to support the Presidential candidate of the APC, President Muhammadu Buhari and its governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu.

Okoya-Thomas, who was a member of the Federal House of Representatives for three consecutive terms, told the journalists that all hands were on deck in Lagos to ensure victory for the APC in the elections.

According to her, the women in the party and the generality of the women in the state are prepared to cast their votes for the APC in the forthcoming general elections.

“We the women in Lagos State are fully prepared for the 2019 general elections. I can assure you that I have been mobilising the women with my team to ensure victory for the APC across board in the elections. The PDP candidates will lose woefully because Lagosian know the opposition party is made up of looters who destroyed our country for 16 years. We don’t want them in Lagos and Nigeria again

“Nigerians have realised that the APC has all it takes to move the country and the state forward more than it has done in the past.

“Our women are fully ready for the elections and I can tell you that no stone would be left unturned to ensure victory for the APC both at the federal level and in the state in the forthcoming general elections,” she said.

Okoya-Thomas emphasized that the APC had laudable programmes for market women, professionals, artisans, civil servants, housewives, widows, young women and others, adding that the party would not disappoint on it’s “Next Level agenda.

The Women Leader stressed that the party had been demonstrating its love for the women with its “Trader Moni’ Project, which she said is being applauded locally and internationally, and that the best was yet to come for the womenfolk under the APC.

She further said that the party would continue to give the women more representation in the government both at the state and at the federal levels, and that she would work with the state government, under the leadership of Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu, to promote the cause of the women and ensure gender equality in all ramifications.

Okoya-Thomas, who commended President Buhari for his concern for the women, revealed that the party has agreed to give the women all the necessary support and protect them against all forms of all violence.

She then used the opportunity to urge the women and all Nigerians to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) and cast their votes enmasse for the APC.

How Lagos Women Will Install Sanwoolu As Next Governor – Jumoke Okoya -Thomas

An assurance has been given that the women in Lagos State would deliver the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu as the next governor of the state in the 2019 general elections.

Addressing a selected group of journalists in Ikeja, Lagos on Tuesday, the Women Leader of the Lagos State chapter of the APC, Hon. Jumoke Okoya-Thomas added that the coast was clear for Mr. Sanwoolu to assume coveted office through the support of the women.

Okoya-Thomas pointed out that the women were aware that the APC had better agenda for the women and the state in general in the coming years and that the party was noted for fulfilling its promises.

The Women Leader revealed that she would not rest on her oars to ensure that Mr. Sanwoolu was given the needed support by the women, who she said constituted about 70% of the voters in the state.

According to her, this explains why women have always been more in all political rallies, especially in the state, adding that all categories of women have been fully mobilised to work for the success of the party in the state.

“We the women don’t believe in violence, but we are always there to support the party. This would not be different, and I am happy that I was given this opportunity to be the APC Women Leader in Lagos State at this material time.

“I have spoken with Mr. Sanwoolu during our several meetings and he assured me that he would run an all-inclusive, which would give more chances to the women once he wins the election.

“There is no doubt that the women have more challenges in our society, but I will use my office as the women leader to ameliorate these, which is why we have perfected strategies to ensure that women come out enmasse to vote for Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu of the APC during the governorship election of March 2, 2019,” she said.

The Women Leader reiterated that the APC was the party to beat, both at the state and at the general levels, saying that people should not be deceived by those, who come to them with empty promises.

Her words: “Lagos cannot afford to go back to Egypt. The progressives have turned the fortunes of the state around since 1999, when Asiwaju Bola Tinubu became the Governor of the Centre of Excellence.

“Later, Asiwaju Tinubu handed over to Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, who also tried his best and his achievements are for the records. “After that, the incumbent Governor Akinwunmi Ambode took over in 2015 with his people-oriented programmes.

“We are all witnesses to the achievements of Governor Ambode. I want to assure you that Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu would continue with the master plan and even do it better.

“That is why I have taken it upon myself to work with the women in the party and other women in the state because they are critical stakeholders in the whole matter.

“Women play multiple roles as wives, mothers, market women, traders, mobilisers, daughters and home keepers. So they have a lot at stake and they cannot afford to allow charlatans take over the leadership of the state.”

Okoya-Thomas revealed that a programme was underway to meet with professionals and career women, who she said could not afford to sit on the fence at this time, “when a man with a sincere heart to protect the interest of the women in person of Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu is being presented by the APC as the next Governor of Lagos State.”
