Court Stops PDP Convention, Threatens To Jail Caretaker Members

…Today’s PDP Convention Is Illegal – Modu Sheriff
A Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) fixed for Port Harcourt tomorrow.

Justice Okon Abang also ordered the endorsement of Form 48 contempt proceedings to be attached with the order against the caretaker committee members, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Committee (INEC) and the Inspector General of Police.

The judge warned the caretaker committee members particularly Senator Ben Obi and Dayo Adeyeye over their acts of disparaging the court.

He held that the Port Harcourt Division of the Federal High Court which made an interim injunction allowing the Wednesday August 17 convention to hold, lacks the jurisdiction to entertain the material because both the PDP and INEC are in Abuja.

The judge restrained INEC from monitoring the convention as well as the PDP from submitting any lists of elected officials to INEC.

Meanwhile, the embattled factional chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has said the national convention of the party slated for Port Harcourt, Rivers State today, is illegal.

Sheriff, a former governor of Borno State also called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN)‎ to get rid of erring judges out of the nation’s judicial system who he said are making a mockery of the judiciary.

Addressing newsmen Tuesday, in Abuja, Sheriff who looked worried and angry said he will not give up on the issue of the party’s chairmanship untill “justice is done” adding that he will not step aside untill a national convention of the party is held in Abuja where every delegate and members of the party would elect new leaders.

He said if that is not done, he would remain in office till 2018, stressing that he was elected by the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) as national chairman of the party.

“But the truth about it is that whatever they do is illegal, unacceptable and we will continue. ‎I am ready to go tomorrow. But let this party not be taken over by one person. We cannot allow it.‎ There are issues that need the attention of everybody.
