Hermes Birkin Bags Go On Clearance At Saks, But The Sale Prices Are A Tease

Here’s news you probably thought you’d never hear: Hermès Birkin bags have gone on sale. But, for a hard-to-get handbag with a six-year wait list and average five-figure price tag, the announcement inevitably comes with a catch. As Fashionista points out, a few styles of the cherished accessory were marked as “clearance” on Saks Off Fifth’s website, but the discount was only three cents.

The scant markdowns apparently didn’t bother some shoppers, though—the bags are now sold out. But luckily screenshots taken this morning show evidence of the products’ hefty sale prices.

Take this Black Ardennes Birkin 30 cm, for example. The black pebbled leather bag was a previously-owned “vintage” piece (circa 1997), according to the product details. Originally, it totaled at $19,500, but at the clearance price, it was a whopping three cents less at $19,499.97.

The same went for this cobalt Hardware Togo Birkin 35 cm, a leather, pre-owned bag circa 2011. It had an original price of $16,500 and a sale price of $16,499.97.

Other Hermès pieces included a brown Togo Birkin 35 cm, blue Swift Birkin 35 cm, and red Togo Birkin 30 cm, but they were already sold out by this morning.

It wasn’t just Birkins on sale, Hermès’ signature Kelly bags were also spotted on clearance—like this yellow courchevel 28 cm and this red ardennes 32 cm—but they were sold out as well.

This isn’t an entirely new phenomenon—vintage Birkin and Kelly bags are occasionally sold on the site, a Saks spokeswoman confirmed to Fashionista. But though this isn’t unprecedented, “clearance” Hermès bags certainly are rare, and they’re going to go fast, no matter how little the discount.
