Why Police Invited Senator Omisore

Fresh facts have emerged on the recent invitation to the former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore by Osun State Police Command over an assault on late Senator Isiaka Adeleke and some other politicians over three years ago.
The assault by Omisore on Adeleke which occurred at the Ideal Nest Hotel in Osogbo prior to the 2014 governorship election in the state led to the defection of Senator Adeleke from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC) and the matter has been under investigation since then. Adeleke died in April this year.

Daily Trust gathered that since the incident in 2014, Omisore has not honoured police invitation and he has not written his statement. Our correspondent gathered that when police submitted the case file to the Department of Public Prosecution in the Ministry of Justice for legal advise, the DPP mandated the police to get the statement of Omisore and others that were involved in the case.
In a chat with Daily Trust correspondent on Monday, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Fimihan Adeoye said police has done the right thing by inviting Omisore to come and write his statement and that the action of police is within the ambit of the law.
“The action of the police is within the ambit of the law. The DPP requested for the case file and we gave them. They realised that the statement of Senator Omisore was not there and DPP requested that we should provide the statement. That was why he was invited. He was not the only one invited. People should not read politics to the activities of the police.”
“We are only investigating a criminal case and we are doing our job as demanded by the law. The actions and activities of the police are not regulated by politics and sentiment. We don’t act on sentiment. The case of assault on late Senator Isiaka Adeleke was kept in view and when DPP asked for the case file, it has to be provided because the case was not dead”.
