Police Quizzes Benue Commissioner Over Varsity Lecturer’s Death

Police in Benue State have questioned the state Commissioner of Arts, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Sekav Iortyom, over the death of a lecturer at the University of Mkar, Gboko, Wilfred Tersoo Tondo.

State commissioner of police, Bashir Makama, told our correspondent by telephone that the culture commissioner was only invited to the station for questioning but was not arrested.

Makama declined to state the reason for the invitation but insisted that the commissioner was neither arrested nor detained.

Unknown gunmen killed Wilfred Tersoo Tondo at his official resident within the University of Mkar in Gboko local government area of the state on August 11.

It was gathered that the late Tondo, a chairmanship aspirant on the platform of All Progressive Congress (APC) was shot around 4am while observing a Christian morning prayer with members of his family, fuelling suspicion that his death was politically motivated.

Police launched investigation over his death

The interrogation of the culture commissioner follows allegation that he was not in good terms with the deceased who was said to have been a preferred candidate of power brokers in the Buruku area where both hailed from against the commissioner’s favourite candidate.

But Mr Iortyom’s Information Manager, Nancy Sunu, dismissed claims that her boss was arrested and detained.

She said: “The commissioner (Mr Iortyom) had even laughed over the media reports on his arrest. He has been in the office since morning and just left to attend to other important issues
