Prince Harry and Meghan: The Importance of Full Disclosure

By Angela Agoawike
With Harry and Meghan deciding to ‘step back’ as senior members of the British Royal family, they have also published a long explanation of how the Royal family is funded. Contrary to the British media cries of tax payers money funding the family, a cry that escalated with Meghan (an outsider!) joining the family, the monarchy actually generates its own funding which it surrenders to the country and in return receives only a fraction of the money it generates (https://sussexroyal.com/funding/).

“In exchange for this public support, The Queen surrenders the revenue from The Crown Estate to the government which for 2017-18 was £329.4 million. The Sovereign Grant for 2019-20 is £82.4 million which is 25% of £329.4 million.”

This has always been behind the strident calls for unrestricted access to members of the family, including the racist trolls against Meghan since she joined the family through marriage to a man she loves-Prince Harry.
Now, hopefully, the British media and public will give will think twice before telling the rest of how taxpayers fund even the air that Meghan breathes. And this is hoping that the other side of Meghan’s family, which has been an unmitigated embarrassment will go get a life and also allow the young, hardworking woman to live her own life.
This was a young successful woman with her own causes and friends. She gave all that up and threw herself into the family. But she was derided and called names by people. And if you have had the opportunity of watching the Netflix movie, The Crown, you will notice that struggling royals receive no support from the family. So, it’s either you end up like the late Princess Margaret or carve out a life for yourself.
Here’s wishing Harry, Meghan and their son the best of 2020 and of the years ahead.
