The remains of Theophilus Oladipo Ogunlesi, Nigeria’s first Professor of Medicine, were finally laid to rest on Friday, April 14, 2023.

Emeritus Professor Ogunlesi, originally from the Sagamu region of Ogun State, died on January 19, 2023. He was 99 years old.

In 1965, he became the nation’s first Professor of Medicine, cementing his place in the annals of medical education.

The burial ceremony began on Tuesday, April 11, with a ceremony in the Old Great Hall of the College of Medicine at the University of Lagos in Idi-Araba, Lagos. 
 
On Wednesday, April 12, there was a lying in state at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan and main foyer of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, followed by a Christian wake the next day, Thursday, April 13, at Igbobi Makun, Sagamu, Ogun State.
 
The event climaxed with a funeral service on Friday, April 14, at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Igbogun Street, Sagamu.
