The Oyo State High court judgment in respect of the murder/manslaughter by Yewande Oyediran of her husband, whereby the woman was sentenced to seven years imprisonment, to me, is a slap on the wrist.
Yewande, a lawyer at the Oyo State ministry of justice, walked away with a mild sentence, just like Oscar Pritorius did in June last year in South Africa.
Oscar, a popular Paralympic athlete, had in 2013, killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp and was sentenced to six years imprisonment.
But the prosecution appealed the sentence and last Friday, the Supreme court of Appeal, increased the sentence to 13 years, describing the initial lower court sentencing as “shockingly lenient”.
I hope a similar appeal in respect of this sentence is entered in this case but l doubt it because the convict in question is a colleague of the prosecutors, being a prosecutor herself in the ministry of justice.
